My name is Xinyu Guan, and I am a PhD candidate in Anthropology at Cornell University. My research interests are in post-socialist urban transformations and public vs. private spaces in China, but more broadly I want to explore history of the development of capitalism as mediated by urban spatial forms, especially in non-Euro-American settings. I have previously conducted research on 1970s and 1980s modernist retail complexes in Singapore, as well as a radical 1970s communal housing project in Hamburg, Germany. I hold a Master’s in Urban Studies from University College London.
